Subject: afterward
Hello!
Curious, after you left, I look again at the line selected by chance and its context:
He puts things in their attitudes,
He is the answerer,
He puts today out of himself with plasticity and love,*
He places his own city, times, reminisences, parents, brothers and
sisters, associations employment and politics, so that the rest
never shame them afterward, nor assume to command them.
What can be answered he answers, and what cannot be answered
he shows how it cannot be answered.
* The line, page and book, chosen by chance for you from page 130 of Walt
Whitman's Leaves of Grass, the first (1855) edition, edited, with an
introduction by Malcolm Cowley, London: Secker and Warburg, 1959 (also
available in a Penguin edition), from four books you chose from about 1
dozen I chose, 7 march 1996.
The name of the poem is Song of the Answerer.
I'm so glad you called
