one

Writing Space: The Computer, Hypertext, and the History of Writing Jay David Bolter, Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, Hillsdale, NJ, 1991

A paradigm classic. A deeply insightful analysis of what hypermedia means. Scholarly but very readable. If you're going to read one book about the Big Picture, get this. (NR)

two

Corporate Networks: The Strategic Use of Telecommunications Thomas Valovic, Artech House, Norwood, MA, 1993

A manifesto for the corporate IT type. Understated, eloquent, lucid, and penetrating, this is the book that makes sense of what the confluence of computer and communications technologies means to business. Valovic writes beautifully, to boot.

three

Hypertext and Hypermedia Jakob Nielsen, Academic Press, Cambridge, MA, 1990

A concise overview of hypertext definitions, history, applications, architecture, creation. "If you can afford only one book on hypertext, this is the one to get." - David Barron, London Times (NR)

four

Cyberspace: First Steps Michael Benedikt, Massachussets Institute of Technology Press, 1991

Arguably the most influential anthology on the subject of Cyberspace yet published. A fine balance of content from architects, interface designers, software engineers and artists. (NR)

five

Multimedia Demystifyed Apple Computer, Random House Electronic Publishers, 1995

Written by Nathan Shedroff's team at Vivid, this is probably the best introduction to the process of building interactive multimedia there is. Knowledgeably explains roles and responsibilities as well as the decisions that need to be made at every step of the design process. There is also a good description of information design, interaction design, and media characteristics in the Design & Prototyping section. Highly anecdotal. (NR)

six

Careers in Multimedia Vivid Media Series, Ziff-Davis Press, 1995

Another Vivid book. An in depth look at the various roles involved in creating interactive media, how they relate, and how to find a job. There are descriptions of various industries and project types and how they vary. But the bulk of the book describes all major roles from administration to design to technology to sounds, to sales, etc. (NR)

seven

Of Two Minds: Hypertext, Pedagogy and Poetics Michael Joyce, University of Michigan Press

One of the first serious thinkers to realize the revolutionary artistic potential of hypertext, Michael Joyce brings that same sense of adventure to bear on the content and structure of this absorbing collection of essays about how the technology of hypertext is transforming culture and classrooms. Not a light read, but it works. (NR)
