A Space Without A Goal

Part III

Everything mirrors everything else. How else do you think you get to find what you're looking for on the Web?

"To See a World in a grain of Sand,
And Heaven in a Wild Flower,
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand,
And Eternity in an hour."
- William Blake

Being scared is simply the connections you're afraid to make.

People will build family histories in this stuff. Genealogy will be done in this stuff.

Wholeness derives from the larger whole.

Being is becoming. Everything is unfinished.

"Everything flows." - Heraclitus

Chaos is equilibrium.

The Web is made chaos, emergent order: made order, emergent chaos.

The future is made.

The Web is intrinsically paradoxical.

There is no hierachy of explanations: there is only holarchy of understanding.

Separateness is meaningless.

A central architectural concern is now flow. Architects will think of time the way they now think of light.

Your cyberspace is more than your web site. It is all your information. Your web site is simply an interface between you and the world.

"Resistance is futile." - A Dalek

"True unity...between man and nature, as well as between man and man, can arise only in a form of action that does not attempt to fragment the whole of reality." - David Bohm

The fabrication of interconnectedness is a paradigm shift on a scale the likes of which we have never encountered.

Behold the demise of distance.

Your web site is an interface. A spatial interface.

The best way to markedly improve things quickly will be to attach attributes and behaviors to the connecting technology. Strengthen the connections.

The overcultivation of order is fatal.

Let go of past assumptions.

Consciousness is holographic. All is holographic.

Meaning breeds.

When everything's connected, we need an evolving perspective. A perspective that allows for the fact that everything changes: philosophy, economics, art, religion, politics - to name a few.

Wholeness is interconnectedness.

Imagine being who you are.

Changes in direction are connected.

Everything you do in this stuff is conjectural. "How will it fit in with the rest?" It will always be entirely conjectural.

When the world's connected, the best thinkers will come from everywhere.

Chaos is good for you.

Take this idea somewhere else.

<letgo>let go</let go>

Connect the meaning of life.

Interconnectedness cannot be described linearly.

"A new human is in the making." - Derrick de Kerckhove

"We shall, sooner or later, arrive at a mechanical equivalent of consciousness." - Thomas Henry Huxley (1825-1895)

"I've been freed from the self
that pretends to be someone,
And in becoming no-one,
I begin to live.
It is worthwhile dying,
to find out what life is."
- T. S. Eliot

"The supreme paradox of all thought is the attempt to discover something that thought cannot think." - Soren Kierkegarrd

Interface design is about improving the connections between you and what you do.

Artists use thought as a tool to communicate. You ain't seen the art we're gonna get in this stuff.

We have a responsibility to keep in here what we have already put in. Someone may have connected to it.

Mind is inherent in the Web.

Cyberart is performance art. Everything is unfinished.

This stuff is the stuff of which myth is made.

Consciousness is changing its state.

You don't need to be Disney to have a theme park. A web site is a theme park. Anyone can have one.

"Evolution is chaos with feedback." - Joeseph Ford

One of the reasons things evolve so quickly on the Web is because connections provide feedback as well as they add to chaos.

The Web is Outside the ordinary range Of what are called statistics.

"It's endless train of thought." - Kirt McMaster

A web site is interconnectedness around a particular theme. A web site is a lack of connections elsewhere.

"What else, when chaos draws all forces inward to shape a single leaf?" - Conrad Aiken

Put an idea from a book into space and you literally free it.

People make direct hyperlinks to nodes they may have found by originally following a very circuitous route. Think of it as one way collective consciousness grows.

The Web: literalized metaphor.

The act of connection is the act of proof.

Right now, interconnected hypertext might be a very, very primitive form of made interconnectedness. But it works.

This stuff binds together the imprint of the past and the project of the future.

We will not recognize our children's children.

"For want of a nail, the shoe was lost;
For want of a shoe, the horse was lost;
For want of a horse, the rider was lost;
For want of a rider, the battle was lost;
For want of a battle, the kingdom was lost."
- Anon

Everything's connected.

Hyperlinks connect thought for others to follow. Share your thoughts for others to follow.

Hyperlinking is analogy-making.

Until we've worked out a way for connections to follow nodes, we should attempt not to move content once we've put it in. Someone may have connected to it.

The Web is a literalization of interconnectedness. The tools which allow us to make and manage manufactured interconnectedness are going to get a lot better.

The Web is a literalization of feedback.

"The dreams of reason bring forth monsters." - Francisco Goya

"It's *all* virtual reality." - John Perry Barlow
